As part of the ‘Creating Carnival Illuminated’ programme our team was tasked with designing and producing a series of large scale illuminated puppets for Tameside Winter Carnival. After conducting some local research we settled on the theme of Tameside Myths, Legends and Traditions. Our characters consisted of a Knight and Horse, Boggart and Rose Queen. Myself and Ellesse Young designed and produced our Rose Queen puppet ‘Rosie’, with the support of Iola Weir who designed the backpack and supporting structure. She is made using a combination of traditional withies and paper, mixed with wire, textiles and artificial foliage.
We also devised and delivered a series of community lantern making workshops across Tameside, enabling schools, colleges, community groups and the general public to take part in the parade on 18th November 2017.
Rosie appeared at Oldham Illuminate on 16th February 2018 after her initial outing at Tameside Winter Carnival. Unfortunately she, along with many other puppets, was lost in a fire at Ray Mill in March 2018. I hope to reincarnate her at a later date.
