In 2013 and 2015 I was the lead costume designer for Manchester School of Samba. In 2013 I developed costumes for the drummers and dancers based around the theme for Manchester Day Parade ‘Wish You Were Here’.
In 2015 I developed costumes based around the Manchester Day Parade theme of ‘Game On’.
Within both themes I used traditional carnival costume techniques and materials, utilising the ever-amazing plastazote for almost all of the pieces in both years. The school’s colours are red, gold and black and the costumes were required to be composed entirely of these colours. In 2013 I used a lot of feathers whereas in 2015 I decided to make use of textiles and trims and opted for a more covered-up costume for the dancers. The dancers customised their own leotards and bra tops for both sets of costumes to allow for comfort and some diversity in the overall look.
