In January and February 2018 I travelled to Kartong, The Gambia with Global Grooves to participate in a cultural exchange of music, dance and visual arts. Working within a team we devised a scratch carnival involving members of the local community. A large illuminated puppet of the Orixa ‘Oxum’, goddess of the river, was designed by Gordon Banks and produced by the Creating Carnival team. We also worked with students of St Martins Basic Cycle School to make over 120 lanterns. Additionally I designed and created a large moon lantern. Together these formed the visual spectacle of our carnival parade which took place on Saturday 3rd February and was Kartong’s very first carnival!
