About

Lauren is an emerging carnival artist who is based in Manchester. She grew up attending festivals such as ‘Streets Ahead’ where she was fascinated by the colours, lights and sounds of street theatre. Her journey into the world of carnival began when she went to a samba dance class in 2009 and she has been hooked ever since.

Lauren has facilitated workshops in Betim, Brazil in conjunction with Missão Ramacrisna and Liverpool Hope University. She collaborated with members of the Futurarte Co-operative to design and produce a range of home wares and fashion accessories made with recycled materials. She graduated with a degree in Design from Liverpool Hope University in 2012 and won awards for her large scale jewellery pieces at her degree show. She has exhibited at Park Bridge Heritage Centre in Tameside, Huyton Gallery and The Cornerstone Gallery in Merseyside, and The Business Design Centre in London.

Since graduation Lauren has become deeply involved in carnival art forms such as dance, music and costume making through groups such as Manchester School of Samba, London School of Samba, Walk the Plank, Cabasa Carnival Arts and Global Grooves. She has assisted in costume and float production since 2012 in these groups. She was the lead Costume Designer for Manchester School of Samba for the Manchester Day Parade in 2013 and 2015.

Lauren is passionate in her love of carnival and the empowerment it brings to communities. She strongly believes that creativity has the power to transform lives and endeavours to inspire people to develop their own creative practice.
